Gary Wright

Gary’s professional theatre career spans over a quarter century, primarily as an actor, but in the past decade, his focus has turned increasingly toward writing stageplays and screenplays. In 15 years as an associate artist at the Foothill Theatre Company, Gary served as literary manager, and wrote stage adaptations of two novels: The Diary of a Forty-Niner by Chauncey Canfield (about a naïve New Englander in the California gold fields), and Bram Stoker’s horror classic Dracula, which was translated into Russian and produced by the Maxim Gorky Drama Theatre in Vladivostok, where it remained in the repertory for two seasons (2000-01). A third play, Evermore (about Edgar Allan Poe’s tender love for his wife Virginia, and his disastrous feud with the editor Dr. Rufus Griswold) premiered at Foothill Theatre Company in the Fall of 2007, and won the Sacramento News & Review critics' award for "Best New Play in the Region". A screen adaptation of Evermore is currently under option to Votiv Films. Gary’s latest stageplay, Of Kites and Kings (about Benjamin Franklin’s falling out with his son William over the American Revolution), premiered at Sacramento Theatre Company in 2015, and enjoyed a subsequent production the following year at Theatre on the Ridge. Gary currently lives in Grass Valley, California, with his wife Carolyn and their dog, Gracie.
