Short and Scary is a full evening of ten-minute horror plays, perfect for the Halloween season. These nine ghostly stories with a feminist twist include Under the Bed, taunting us with what’s coming, making it even more frightening; Camp Lumberjack, introducing us to the mysterious Heloise who finds herself trapped in a haunted camp; The Perfect Boyfriend, opening with Abby terrified because someone broke in and cleaned her apartment; Whispering to the Dead, featuring a perfect first date until Kyle finds out what Elise does for a living; 15 Minutes in a Haunted House,taking us on a journey that ends very badly for Matt; The Rest of Your Life, turning the tables on a would-be killer; The Night Visitor, probing the demons that follow us; Take My Place, leading us to an attic where the cries never end; and Ghost Pond, bringing new friends together until the local ghost stories tear them apart.

About the Playwright
Deirdre Girard, who tells women’s stories, received her Playwriting MFA at Boston University. She has had dozens of one-act plays produced both nationally and internationally as well as two full-length plays; several of her award winning short plays have been published in anthologies and as collections. Deirdre was named a 2012/13 and returning 2013/14 Playwriting Fellow at New Repertory Theater, and was selected for both Company One Play Labs and Central Square Theater’s TWSS play development program. Most recently she completed a commission from Peabody Essex Museum, won QC Theatre’s Susan Glaspell national playwriting award for her play In the Buff, won the 2019 Boston Playwright’s Slam, was selected for Barrington Stage’s 2020 10×10 festival and for the 2020 and 2021 Boston Theater Marathons. She is a playwriting instructor/mentor for several organizations including Gloucester Stage, the Massachusetts Young Playwrights Project, and Northeastern University’s Silver Masque Theatre. Additionally, Deirdre is a member of the advisory council for Boston Playwrights Theatre and Boston University’s MFA playwriting program, and an editor for Stage Source’s New Play Alliance Newsletter.
